Hi everyone,
I'm a high school teacher with two kids under five. I'm thinking about starting up my own family daycare business so I can spend more time with my kids as I currently work full time and feel as though I never see them. I'm after some feedback from people who have done it though. Is it as enjoyable a job as it seems??? TIA xxx

My mum did family daycare when we were growing up. Depending on the kids being looked after it could be fun or a total drag! We couldn't do much in school holidays because of the kids and it felt like our house wasn't our own at times. Kids wanting to play with your toys all the time, no privacy etc. and we had to share mum ALL the time. Oh and then the parents would be late to pick the kids up and want to talk for ages! There is a lot more red tape and paper work involved now. I had a friend do it who stopped because the money just didn't add up to what was expected so I would do my sums very carefully.

Were we live there are a few that do just before and after school. My kids go one day - daughter in kindergarten does before and after school and my preschooler there for the day. With B&A card you can have more kids and the day free plus no school holidays unless you want to. Older kids easier to look after! You can earn as much as a teacher doing this apparently (according to a teacher friend of mine)
I'm currently a family day care mum wanted to do it so that I could spend more time with my children, I do enjoy it to an extent but being in a small town with a daycare facility that is not full it does make it hard as well I currently have only one child for 21 hrs a week and it does make it hard as the income isn't all that great and there are expensives that you need to take into consideration ie insurances etc
My mum quit her job and started family daycare when my son (18months) was born so that she could watch him when I went back to work full time. There is a lot of red tape, paperwork and expenses involved. You really need to be the right kind of person to do it because it is very full on. My mum is single and has always been a hermit and not one for socializing. She has kids from 7 in the morning until sometimes 7 at night 6 days a week and is always booked out on public holidays because regular daycare centre's are closed. She finds it extremely rewarding but it's a lot of work and doesn't leave much you time. After seeing how much she does I can say family daycare mums are amazing.
