Hi I live in townsville and have a 2 yo boy. Mount Louisa, kirwan and north shore are all nice areas and aren't far from shopping centers and riverway. I would suggest jumping on realestate.com.au and searching for houses to rent then have a look at them on street view on google maps to see what the rest of the street is like. In terms of kids and making friends you could kids in harmony and gymbaroo are lots of fun. Or the libraries hold story time/rhyme time each week which is free and a great way to meet people. Check out the council website. Pm me if you want any further info. Good luck with the move.
Most suburbs in Townsville are great, they all have their bad parts too, some suburbs have a little bit more of a reputation too. Annandale, Mt Louisa, Douglas, and North Shore, tend to have more good reps than bad. I have lived in Douglas for the last 4 years and are about to move to Kelso which has a bad rep but we are moving into one of the good areas of it so I'm not too worried. Our real estate has been Ray White Munro Partners which has been fantastic over the last 4 years. I have heard you should stay away from Page & Pearce and Townsville Rentals. I agree with what Megan said too, search for houses to rent then look at them on street view and also you can google the street and suburb for crime then you can get a good idea of what happens and how often and whether you would be comfortable there. I've ever used a day care center or a playgroup but there are heaps around town and as Megan said, check the council website :)
