My daughter is 14. She is keen to get a part time job. She lives with ASD / Aspergers type 1 but is very high functioning, an A grade student.
She is awesome with rules but doesn’t like change and noise and people crowding her, ( so maccas, kfc places where lots of people are behind a counter are probably a no.)
What jobs have your ASD teenagers been successful in.
She is well aware of her diagnosis and is very good at letting people know how it affects her, things like not getting sarcasm and being offended by jokes she doesn’t “ get “. People not following the rules etc
She also wants to know, does she tell a future employer of her diagnosis, ( I think, yes,)
She is such a great advocate for children with ASD and would make a very loyal employer for the right boss. We are in north Brisbane.
She has asked me to post this.
What job do you recommend for a 14 year old with ASD

I dont think she should tell an employer before she has the job.
I don't think theres much she can do as takeaway is one of the only industries that can hire kids from 14, most others are 16 or even 18. She could try a quiet cafe or even look into her own little business venture. This is where Aspergers really shines as they can put so much effort into it.
I would recommend a micro business cratering around her interests and strengths.
Some ideas I’ve seen others implement that may or may not suit her
1. Helping people set up there technology/understand there tech
2. Selling dehydrated fruits and veggies
3. Girl Friday type job (I got this kind of job after school and I did weird jobs in an office like laminating signs, filing, shredding, tidying areas etc)
4. Watering plants, feeding pets while people are away, dog walking
5. Offering lamination, shredding services privately
These are just some suggestions I’m sure there are many more options. But I wouldn’t get trapped into the idea it must be with a company.
Library assistant. Art space.
I worked with a year 12 boy with Aspergers in a local restaurant. He started on dishes and moved through positions when he was ready.
I was 26 years old at the time (now 41yrs) I learnt so much from him, I was just a co worker.
As advise maybe a smaller business that can work in with any extra needs that may arise.
Definitely tell the employer
I owned a cafe, we now have a trade business.
We need to know if anything needs to be worked around.
If she doesn’t get offered a position because of it, it’s not the environment for her.
Hubby worked cook at kfc. Asd can be a benifit to employers. Anything that requires attention to detail. Hubby can pull things apart and put them back working faster than anyone we know. He needs to be busy line work ect isnt for him but your daughter might be different. What are her personal interests, i would start there :)
