My son has an ex girlfriend who broke up on good terms. She was gay

Last year they were messaging each other and she said she was talking to a guy because she was curious if she was gay or not. My son offered to assist her to explore this. She agreed.
He went to her house and was touching her outside of her clothes, he asked if he could touch under her clothes and she nodded, he then asked if he could put his fingers inside of her, to which she nodded. He noticed that she was looking uncomfortable and asked if he should keep going, she nodded. This occured a few times. He asked if she wanted him to stop she said yes.
They were still in contact for some time after then stopped chatting.
Recently she has contacted him and they talked about that night then stopped contacting each other again.
He had the police come to his house and he is facing charges for penetration without consent.
For me this is difficult because no mother wants to think their son is capable of such an act.
I'm thinking there will be no way of knowing the whole truth.
If the incident is the way he described what is the best way to support him through this? What avenues can we access?

Get a lawyer. Tell him not to say anything without a lawyer. Also, laws differ depending on your state, so internet advice should be taken with a strong grain of salt. Seek professional legal advice!!!!
He informed me of this after returning home from the police station and giving his statement.
He told me what he told the police. He has screenshotted, from his PC, their conversation from recently. It appears they were both having different discussions of the event, he was apologising and it looks so bad, then he said "I'm glad I stopped when I checked if you were ok"
No charges have been laid and we have sought legal aid for advice.
Do not say a word to police. Seriously, don't. Do not give any statements without a lawyer present. If police arrest or ask him to attend police station, do not say anything apart from requesting lawyer etc..zero. zilch. Silence is not a signal of guilt, rather protection of your rights.
This may get quite costly but do not go into a police station without a lawyer present under these circumstances.
