Family friendly Melbourne suburbs

Hi Ladies,
I'm just wondering if anyone has advice on family friendly suburbs to live near Melbourne... Would be moving from NSW, no family down that way and a single mum of two. Needs to have a low crime rate. Close to a good private school and parks/walking tracks would be ideal. Although my budget is fairly limited and I have little knowledge of the area, I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Welcome to Melbourne! I live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. A suburb called ferntree Gully. Close to the Dandenong rangers but not to far from the cbd. Plenty of good private schools too. Not to sure about crime rate though. I don't think it's to bad but I think crime is everywhere anyway. Good luck ?

Agree with the poster above, the Eastern Suburbs! I am also from this area (Boronia). Crime is everywhere but you don't hear much about anything out this way, mainly just car thefts or petty things (people leaving cars unlocked in the first place).

Heaps of Private Schools around, I recommend Mater Christi (girls) and St Josephs (boys) or Emmaus College (they are all catholic however we are not, great schools!!).

Most of these suburbs are building up, affordability wise you may be better off looking at Upwey or Belgrave for homes which is still very cheap and only about 10 extra minutes out.

There's also Pakenham and Officer which are very cheap for housing, but there is a very wide variety of cultures and crime rates appear to be a bit higher around here.

I live in Vermont - eastern suburbs and my daughter goes to a private school 15min drive from home. I would consider Blackburn, Forest Hill, Vermont, Vermont South, Glen Waverley. Excellent areas with plenty of private schools, nice shopping centers, parks, easy access to public transport and most important low crime rate. Stick to the eastern suburbs. Good luck

I live in Mernda, northern suburbs and we have a load of private schools, it's a lovely area semi rural but close enough to the city.. crimes not so bad I'm sure crime is everywhere but here it's not scary to walk the streets at night or anything in fact the neighbourhood comes alive of a warm evening with family's going for walks, I love it out here!
