I attended a parent / teacher information last night. And to be honest really didn’t feel like going. After picking the kids up and getting home the last thing I felt like doing was taking myself back there. But I did and I’m happy about it.
Look I’m going to cut to the chase. Working in an educational business I am mostly impressed by the amount of parents that come in looking for resources to help their child at home. But sadly, I do often get the remarks like “it’s the teacher’s job to teach my kid not mine”.
But when it’s all said and done we are their main mentor in life and we really need to engage in their learning more than anyone.
Here’s some items I will be taking home tonight. You should be able to get all of this items at your local Educational Supplier. If your in Cairns this is where I work and I would be happy to help you if you pop in and see me.
Counting cubes this are a perfect way for your child to have a hands on learning experience with for addition and subtraction. You could also use these cubes for colour recognition, pattern sequencing etc. (Approx $30 can obtain cheaper ones)
Once the child can recognise numbers without visual stimulant this board is perfect for number recognition from 1-100. This chart will be useful for many years during their school life for instance patterning, addition and subtraction, Odd numbers even numbers. etc. (Approx 2.50)
This is an ideal independent activity for your child to practice Queensland font.
Numbers are fun: One thing the teacher emphasised was the fact that your child may know how to count yet they may not have grasped number recognition. A good way to help them learn was to pick out various numbers to see if they recognised them for instance point to 15 on the chart and ask what number is this? If they don’t know which number it is they can then count the objects to identify different numbers.( Approx $9.95 )
Responsibilities and Rewards Chart this chart is double sided chart that covers all years (the other side is a junior version) It covers Making your bed ect, Brushing your teeth etc. (Approx $11.95)
Readers in appropriate level, most educational suppliers should stock readers from levels 1- 33 (approx $5.95 – 12.95)

Wow my big boy is only in pre-prep but I may just have to stop by, he loves to 'show off' his knowledge to daddy and I and these look fantastic!!
Great Kylie! - Make sure you let me know when yo come in. We have awesome stuff for pre-prep also
awsome - I'll be in tomorrow!!
Awesome! - See you then Kylie.
I think you are spot on. Education begins at home. Kids start learning from the moment they are born, and the earlier we start teaching them, the quicker they will learn. Just remember to choose age appropriate activities and encourage, not force your child to learn / play with them.
Good point Tracy. It is very important to choose age relevant educational products.
My daughter is only in kindy but I have been wanting to get some number / letter sheets and cards, so i"ll have to come into your store and have a look to see what you have :) and definately agree that we should be helping them just as much (if not more) than their teachers.
I NEED that rewards/responsibilities chart!! I'm in Melbourne - how do I get one? x
