Working over christmas

Question for the shift working parents, I work as a nurse and I have been rostered to work Xmas as has my husband...
My husbands family have not seen my children more than twice this year and only live 30mins up the road... My family live 7hrs away:( my children are 3...
What do other working parents do? Do I ask our au pair to work? I would still only see them for an hr Xmas day or do I pack them up for a holiday with the grandparents?

Im lucky I got approved for 2 weeks off this christmas (although unpaid so we will be struggling). However as you know the kids get 6 weeks off school. So my brother is going to be having my son for the other 4 weeks. I will be picking him up and dropping him off every day over this period, my brother lives 30mins away. Its tough being a working mum but we do what we have to do. X

Asking the au pair is a bit strange because she is the one who is looking for an Australian experience and she should be off. Unless if you ask her. I don't know how old she is but don't give her feeling she should be guilty if she says no.

Most girls don't have family nearby and want to spend it with the friends they make. It is also an hard time for them. It still is for me.
