So his in jail.. now what

I have just found out that the father of my two boys is in jail. He was on bail but now for unknown reasons is being remanded in jail. He has seen our children only once in 12 months and hasnt paid child support for just over 12 months. He wouldnt even call child support and tell them he wasnt working so i could get what i was entitled to for the sake if the kids. For this period of time he has had no job no centrelink and has definitely been using drugs.
I have rang child support and centrelink and told them that he is in jail and they are investigating so i can get what im entitled to. My question is what else can i do? Realistically i wish i could remove him from their birth certificate so he never sees them again his a hope less father in the sense that he never tries or never does anything with them and if things werent smooth sailing he always sent them back home. But i know the courts probably wont do that. Is my best bet to speak to a lawyer even though i have no idea what i want to do?
Im so confused and angry please help

Depending on what he has been charged with, you may be able to remove his parental rights (child abuse, for example). Wouldn't be able to do it until he is found guilty. Speak to a solicitor.
