I took my daughters in September. Twelve day road trip from one end of NZ to the other. Stayed in hotels along the way, got Drize NZ to arrange it all for me. Cost me around $6000 all up.
It was all four seasons at that time. We end up keeping a change of clothes handy in the car. You could be in shorts and sunshine, drive around a corner and find snow. Insanely beautiful.
Clothing will depend on where you are going. South Island will be COLD and the further south, the colder it gets.
We go to the South Island (Christchurch and down to Timaru) in April, so I'd say a similar time just Start of Winter instead of the end. You will need Winter coats, hats etc. Not necessarily Snow gear, but warm.
