Work after kids

Work after kids

Getting into work after kids. Im 28 and have been with my kids from day one when i was 19. Ive been a personal carer and got my certificate 3 in disability, and beauty and cert 4 in mental health.
Im finding it very difficult to obtain work. I cant afford to get my resume professionally done and i panic in interviews. Does any one have any advice? How many mums have successfully gotten into work?

I am finding it nearly impossible to get back into the workforce after being a sahm for 12 years. I have been looking for a job for 5 years; just applied for my 902 job this morning. I have done volunteer work, have unskilled and have had my resume professional done and it hasn't helped at all. At 48, I am starting to think that I will probably never work again. It sucks but with so many people looking for work, SAHM's don't even get a look in unfortunately. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. If you dont mind me asking, do you have any qualifications or certificates? Im thinking of starting my aged care course aswell but unsure if it would make a difference

I have a Certificate 3 in Business Management and a Certificate 3 in Accounts, and 17 years pre-child experience in Admin. All worthless now apparently. I have since done a Diploma in Interior Design (tried starting up my own business without success) and can't seem to find a job because I lack the experience.

Wow that doesnt give me much faith at all.
Im a single mum, im worried im not going to be able to provide for my children once im unable to claim centrelink.
I don't understand how they say you lack experience when its obvious youve got the experience there?
Ive managed to secure some volunteer placement in aged care today but it doesnt mean ill get a job out of it. I dont know how to go about it!

Good news about the volunteer work. If you are interested in Aged Care then do the Certificate. You need to do 120 hrs of placement, and you have that in place now. You can do the theory online. There is a good chance you will get a job there if you get your certificate.

It cost me 30 bucks to get my resume rejigged by a woman in Townsville. I am not sure if it was a coincidence but after many months, I got a job straightaway with the altered one.

I was a SAHM for 4 years and after being knocked back for everything I wanted I applied for all of the shit jobs too. It was a factory that gave me a start and as far from glamorous or easy as you can possibly imagine but I started at the bottom completely unskilled and worked my way up. Just find someone with good communication skills to help write the resume, I've done resumes for colleagues to help them work their way up too and as for the interview - fake it til you make it. Iron your clothes, put on some lip gloss and smile. If they make you feel uncomfortable you don't want that job anyway but be ready for questions on where you see yourself in the near future (pick something within the company such as "my interest is in mental health and I can see how a career here can provide the opportunities to advance towards that", and what you can bring to the business like hard work ethic, loyalty, the ability to think outside the square, problem solving - all good ones). The biggest issue I've found was care of the kids, they just wanted to know I had a contingency plan for sick kids etc. Now I'm not quite 40, kids grown up and I've advanced to the head of my department. It's doable.

Hey mama, if you like I can take a look at your resume? I'm not a pro but can offer you some tips if that helps?
