Child with hearing loss

Okay my 2.5 year old daughter has mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears she is fitted with hearing aids, I was wondering what other parents in my situation did to help their child along with speech as my daughter is a little bit behind on her speech, I feel as it's my fault she's this way as she was born premature

This is Not your fault at all. Just like my son having multiple disabilities is NOT my fault. It's just plain old random roll of the dice.

There will be kids who are 5 who will turn up to school with undiagnosed speech delays because the parents either ignored it or didn't realise.

Is she receiving regular speech therapy? If so that all you need to do. If she is just a little behind, don't stress. She has plenty of time. The fantastic news is speech is developping and will continue to develop.

Have you received some counselling to help you process what happened? You didn't cause this.

My mum use to sit with me every night with flash cards and teach me how to say them right and we would only do a few at night but if I got them correct she would let me pick a teddy bear sticker or a minty. It helped me alot.

Hi, it definitely isn't your fault - mild to moderate hearing loss will cause language delays even with hearing aids. The charities that support kids with hearing loss to learn to talk can help you - have a look at www.firstvoice.org.au to see who is close to you and give them a call. Normal speech therapy is not enough because language delay from hearing loss is due to different causes than normal language delay.

From experience the quicker you get her on to a program the better the outcome will be.

Good luck - I'm sure she will do brilliantly well!

Not your fault!!!

On the Gold Coast is a centre called Hear n Say, as the name suggests, they work with hearing and speech for young kids, not sure if they're all over QLD or Aus but worth looking into. They were brilliant with my son who has ASD, ADHD, ODD and mild/moderate hearing loss in high frequency range.
