I have a rental, and the tenants that have just moved out have left a mess and about $5000 worth of damage and general agreement that we had in our agreement. Has anyone been to court and been successful?

Been to court yes to get the police to move them out but then claimed damages through insurance. I'm sorry but in my experience you can't get blood out of a stone.
Just claim it through landlord's insurance?? Unless you don't have it. Which would be abolutely insane, and you have demonstrated exactly why it's worth getting! We've never had tenants do damage, but we have been through QCAT for other things like fencing/retaining walls - absolute nightmare process. Takes forever, they repeatedly don't show up in court, and it's like getting blood out of a stone when it all finally comes to an end. Good luck, hope you sort it out.
