Becoming a Midwife

Becoming a Midwife

Hi IM's, I'm just hoping I might be able to get some advice. I would love to become a Midwife, but I have no idea where to begin. I am 31 years old, left high school before I finished year 9. I haven't done any courses since. I'm not sure if I need to do a HSC equivalent course first, or if I would be considered a mature age student? I'm lost! Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

I would call the university and speak to an admissions person or course advisor (or email), explain your situation and see what they recommend.
Just be aware that this is probably their busiest time with uni offers being released

There are bridging courses available for mature age students which might help prepare you for study, given you didn't complete HSC. Best to contact the university and find out entry requirements.

Something you need to consider and find out about: when I was considering midwifery training, I was advised that hospitals are more likely to take on midwives who completed nursing then did midwifery in post-grad study. This was due to medication endorsements and many other reasons. I don't know how true it is, but it's something I would be looking into. I'd hate to get through study and find out my job prospects were limited. Good luck!
