Suspected dyslexia in prep aged child (5 1/2 years- strong family history and school flagging issue). Any point in paying over $1200 for formal assessment ? My understanding is that it's not recognized as a disability and not eligiblefor teacher aide funding at school.
Best schools in western Brisbane/Ipswich area for supporting learning. Current public school admits teachers have no training in dyslexia and cannot offer any support or advice.
Thanks

See Fruition Tuition. Our boy is Dyslexic, he attends twice a week 4hours in total.
He is in year 4. Had our panel meeting with school yesterday. Honestly the only thing that has helped him is the tutor.
If he is dyslexic he will get help from a teacher aide in school but he’ll not get his own teacher aide, if you don’t have him assessed then he won’t get help at all
I think its worth it, every year when your child changes teachers he/she is not going to have the diagnosis on any forms, they may get a heads up from the preceeding teacher but sometimes not. If you need to tell each teacher you think they have dyslexia it could get shrugged off by some that think you're a helicopter and the kid is lazy. With the formal diagnosis he/she should always be taken seriously and they will make sure they are in a class with an aide. You never know it may change in the future.
Definitely get him assessed - why would you put him further behind the 8 ball, when you already have suspicions at this early stage.
Do it. I wasn’t diagnosed till I was 19 and it affected my schooling immensely
Yes get him assessed it will help you to help him to learn. My daughter who is close to 7 recently had a test for this and other learning disabilities cost $800, maybe look around and find somewhere cheaper. I am also in Brisbane.
Do the assessment and then get a specialised tutor. It’s up to you to construct your child’s pathway in life. Don’t pass the buck!
I haven’t been able to afford a diagnosis and my son is in speech therapy and it is likely he is dyslexic as well as Auditory Processing Disorder (which did not have a huge cost to diagnose). I struggle to get school to even acknowledge what APD is and that it is real and needs support. Maybe a diagnosis of Dyslexia would be more accepted? His speech therapist has even offered support and a staff development session which was refused! So I guess what I’m saying is that if you think it will actually help, then I would do it but if not, the money is a lot!
