Enrolled nurse or RN,

Anon Imperfect Mum

Enrolled nurse or RN,

Hi I’M’s

Calling all EN or RN’s
Thinking of studying to become an EN and if I like it I will go on and study my RN,

What’s an average shift like???(obviously busy)
What do you love and hate about your job,??
Do you ever get used to death, body fluids etc??
Would you absolutely not recommend it as a career and wished you chose a different career??
Any information appreciated

Thanks

My sister is an EN
She said it’s a hard gruelling job, it’s long shifts, and it’s extremely hard to get work in a hospital or even a nursing home. You should never get used to death, if you get used to it you need to find another job,
Bodily fluids are a part of it, if you don’t like poo wee vomit or blood don’t even bother

Would actually like first hand advice,👍🏼
Thanks though,

I’m late 30’s,looking for a career change after kids,
Of course it’s hard work,
And of course who would get used to death...my fault,my wording was off...
I mean detach as it would be hard in any case...

Honestly, nurses work in sooooo many settings. I work in a multi disciplinary team with nurses. We don't deal with any of that because we specialise in reviewing their medical interventions to identify where further allied health and specialist intervention may be required and assessing the functional impact of their medical conditions. If you like the knowledge a nurse needs, you can find the right fit for work once you're qualified.

Great, thank you so much for your input,
I thought there would be a host of avenues,

I do have 4 kids,so I’m used to body fluids but it is so different with adults,
I don’t have a weak stomach as such, but I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had to look after anyone apart from my hubby and kids,
And I’ve not had anything to do with death etc,... haven’t lost anyone close,
I haven’t even been to a funeral of a family member since my grandfathers,when I was 12, I’m late 30’s,

Hi there, im an enrolled nurse in a hosptial setting. Currently doing my RNs.
I started in agedcare as an AIN 10years ago. Good way to get into a health setting and gives you the core elements of nursing, with minimal investment in study. I love it! What you get out of the career outways the negatives i think. At the risk of sound super chessy it is one of those careers that you are drawn to. A calling.

Death is a part of life - i see it as a honour if you are part of someones journey especially in the end, what you can do to make them painfree and comfortable. Comforting the family if needed. It draws an element of human kindness that beautiful. Some deaths will effect you more than others. The important thing is to talk about it. Its ok to grieve.

Bodily fluids are gross, being a mother prepares you for this part. You do get used to breathing through your mouth lol.

Its hard work but rewarding. You have so many different roles. Some are busy, some are not. I work on a nursing support team, which means i fill in. So i go everywhere in the hospital. All the areas are so different.
The shift start and finish times can vary as well depending on what shift im filling, same in aged care also.
