Hi Ladies,
I'm just wondering about the cheapest and most efficient way to move interstate. It'll be just me n my 2 kids currently 2.5yo & 1.5yo. i want to do it before my oldest starts school (3 years) moving from brissy area to melbourne. Don't have a house or anything set up yet i just want to start saving now for moving costs as much as possible but want to know what i'm saving to if that makes sense. Any info from those that have done it before would be great thanks !! :D also would it be cheaper/ better to just get a house and then get furniture from the same new state instead of getting it drivin? thanks in advance :D

I've moved from Sydney to adelaide. The cheapest way to move belongings is to 'back load'. Basically your stuff is put in with someone else's load. Much cheaper than paying a proper removalist. You can basically do an online calculator thing to get an idea of the cost. My advice is to do a major clean out before you leave though so your not paying for stuff you don't want. You can also get quotes online for transporting your car so you can get a guide. The biggest hassle about moving states is accommodation as many rental agencies won't rent homes to you unless you've seen the property in person. To overcome that you can hire someone to look at the property or if you have a family member they can do it. I'd way up carefully how much belongings are worth before transporting.
Removalist: you can get a quote so you have an idea.
Your move: flights, taxi, bus, car drive petrol, overnight stay etc
You might need to stay in temporary short term place until you find somewhere, which is more expensive & may need bond before your current one is released.
New deposits on electricity, gas, rentals etc. finalising bills in old place will happen at the same time.
Changeover drivers licence/ car rego ( some states give some leeway so its not right away)
Its easier if you have a lump saved for replacing the junk you didnt bring & Getting around or getting a babysitter while youre new & sorting yourself out with house/ job etc.
Also depending on seasons your family might need winter wardrobes.
I moved from qld to nsw and we brought furniture because we brought fridge, washer, beds, shelves, bicycles etc, once you get a quote for removals you can decide whats better. We left our sofa cos we hated it & got a new one once here. We were without our stuff for 4 weeks though, so you might want to rent a furnished place while youre waiting or just decide to buy them once you move.
Good luck, Moving state is fun!
