Curly hair care

Help a sister out! I have totally straight hair - so my hair care regime is very different.

My little boy has super curly hair and just gets so knotted and tangled!

Currently we wash with baby shampoo which we use for his whole body then some leave on conditioner after but it’s so hard to get the knots out of his little baby hair

What are your tips and tricks for curls? Both for babies / toddlers but also anything that will be helpful down the track would be great.

People are telling me to just cut it short but I don’t want to.

Start using a proper conditioner. While the conditioner is in, comb his hair. Then rinse the hair but don’t rinse all the conditioner out.
Curly hair needs so much more conditioner and keep washing down to the bare minimum.
Invest in a comb or brush designed for curly hair. Brush/comb as little as possible.

Use lots and lots of conditioner, only ever brush it while in the bath or shower, soaked and covered in conditioner. Never brush curly hair dry it hurts so much. Never use any of those regular brushes, they’re not made for curly hair. Use a wide comb or find the right brush for him. It doesn’t have to hurt. Silk pillow case to stop knots. I also hardly ever wash with shampoo.

My son has very curly hair and what works is shaving their head.
Or -
Use a shampoo and conditioner made for curly hair

Brush hair before bath or shower and comb it when it's wet, never brush or comb it any other time.

Try and not wash every day, curls are at their best on the second and third day but do wet it every day so it can be brushed

When he's older use a bit of hair oil in his hair after washing, I wouldn't do this on a very young child as they are always rubbing their eyes and playing with their hair.

Let it grow and get past the Ronald McDonald stage.

A vinegar rinse and cold water makes for very nice curls, something to remember in the future if you're going somewhere lol.

The hardest part is the knots, it can turn very nasty if it's not brushed properly every day and I've had to cut knots out of my sons hair many times.

Haha love that advice to let it grow past the Ronald Macdonald stage. That’s definitely the plan!! (And also where it’s at right now which is funny)

Kids shampoos are not made for think, natural curls.

Buy a tangle brush, and brunch hair dry with it, not wet as wet will snag. Shampoo once a week, and condition every other day. Get a wide tooth comb for after. With leave ins, use more then you think you should, let it air dry. Once it's dry, give a scrunch and separate the curls.

Nooooo don’t cut it short- try the curly girl method where you condition first then wash. We started doing this for our little one followed by combing his hair very carefully when wet with conditioner and scrunching with Moroccan oil after drying ( you can get a Garnier version). Everyone told us to cut it short but he loved his luscious curls and kept them till he was 5 when he decided to get a short back and sides cut- still beautiful curls on top
And don’t listen to the ones telling you to cut it!
