My son has ADHD & struggling at school. Suspensions for violence and acting silly in class all the time. Just wondering if an OT would help? Do they go to the school and sit with them and help at all? What is their role? Also, is this something I need to see the GP for to get a referral? Thankyou

OT is helpful, you’ll go to them and they’ll observe your child and help you with areas in need by giving exercises and strategies. They can also listen to what you say and can make suggestions for implementation at school (a good teacher will already be trying these things but sometimes they need a report from a professional to be nudged to implement) it also helps you know everyone is on the same page and what is working or not working.
Short answer - as the parent of a child who has been to OT for the past 8 years, and a learning support teacher, I believe EVERY child would benefit from OT, and that it should be a part of school curriculum.
Go for it. You don't need a referral, but if you have diagnosis you may want to see you GP for a mental health care plan that will give you subsidised visits.
