No will found, what do I do now??

My mother passed away suddenly 3 days before Christmas and I'm really struggling to come to terms with it all! I'm also pregnant so trying to keep my emotions in as much as possible so I don't stress out the baby!
We have realised there is no will or funeral cover so have the added pressure of trying to cover everything! If anyone has been through this I would love to know what I have to do next? She had no partner and my younger brother and I are next of kin so I know most will fall to me to do but I want to be as prepared as I can! We have the funeral sorted but I have no idea what comes after that! What organisations do I get in touch with, who do I need to notify! Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! Xx

I'm sorry for your loss, it's truly heartbreaking. My mum passed in June 6 weeks before my son was due so I feel your pain :( We couldn't find my Mum's will (initially, found it later) and I think if there is no will it all goes to their estate from memory. You will need to advise her death to centrelink, banks, phone companies etc.

I highly recommend make an appointment with a solicitor. The costs of the solicitor and the funeral costs can come out of estate - most funeral directors are used to this happening. If you appoint a solicitor they write to organisations that need to be advised as well as arrange for all monies in banks super insurance etc to be brought in. Any of her bills etc can be taken in to them and they will advise you what to do or pay these out of the estate. It will be a much less stressful process for you to have someone to take care of it for you instead, especially if there is property etc involved. Im so sorry to hear of your loss x

Have u been to her finical institution??? My Mum passed away when I was 23, im an only child and she too was also single. I went to get bank and close accounts and suss out debts. They offered to help with funeral costs and helped me take care of her debts. It worked ok for me. Also see Centrelink they maybe also be able to provide asstince depending on your and your mothers situation. There was also a property involved and I had to go to the land deeds office in Sydney to get that sorted out. I also went to BDM for the death certificate to hurry things along, my mum just had a typed out will, I found it in her files at the house. You will also need to contact the tax department to suss out super and all that stuff. Also check if she had shares any where. All that may be able to also help with any costs you may have. PM if you have questions. I'm in NSW and did all this in NSW. Condolences, my mother passed away tragically as well. It's not easy, my thoughts are with you.
