Mums in emergency services

Hello mums, this is a question for any mums working in emergency services, police, ambos, fireys. How do you deal with juggling day to day life? I am about to start my new career as a police officer and to be honest I am nervous. I have a wonderful little boy who hasn't even started school yet, will I be around enough for him? I have a wonderful husband who will be working fulltime also but not crazy hours. I don't want to put my career first, I don't want to regret this, but to be honest it's going to give him such a fantastic life!

Its like most shift work.Depending on what shifts are available and how you plan your sleep you could be there for school drop off or pick up. If you do school run in your uniform be prepared for lots of questions and siren noises from the kids.
You could also change his routine, maybe a later bedtime, so you can spend more time together. Make the time you have together quality time, so save any chores for when he is asleep or at school. He will also become more independant as he starts school.
I'm a rural firefighter so my kids have to deal with random call outs instead of shift work. If I spend the day at a fire they get to stay up late so I can see them. They have seen the station and trucks. I don't tell them about the risks involved with fire fighting so they have adjusted well and don't worry about me. Something you might want to think about when asked what you do at work, maybe say you help adults to share and play nice.
Go for it, you will both adjust to work and school.
