Work Social Gatherings
Hello!! What are people's thoughts on work social outings? Is it important to attend? Social etiquette?
I have been in a job for about a year, I have attended a couple of social work functions. Nobody really talked to me or acknowledged me despite my efforts to start or join conversations. I have decided I won't attend social functions, I won't waste my money or time away from my family if I am going to just be ignored or made to feel excluded. I am now feeling like I am being completely excluded.
I have never had very good social skills (another story for another day) however I am not rude, I am honest, I don't gossip or say nasty things about people, I am open, team worker and reliable. Sometimes my humour can be a bit dry and straight to the point. I'm not sure where I am going wrong? I am starting to think I am just destined not to have close friends in work. What are others thoughts?
Hope I have made sense with what I am trying to ask.

This is going to sound extreme, but I have seen a psychologist for my social skills. It really helped. I was able to identify body language amongst other things that were turning people off. It was really helpful.
