I'm a working single mum, my kids want to see snow. But it's extraordinarily expensive. Anyone have any suggestions how I could take them to experience the snow on a budget? We are in the Illawarra

Best to go in the low season. Around early Sept onwards. Have a look at The Station Resort deals in Jindabyne. They're great value and perfect for families.
Then you have the choice of visiting Perisher or Thredbo.
I agree, I think about two seasons ago, we got a deal with the station Jindabyne that was two nights accomodation and a two day lift pass for $199 per person! That's cheap as! You will obviously have to hire skis and snow gear, however even that is not that dear.
The other option is, if you know anyone who lives in Canberra that you could stay with, get a murrays bus day trip. These include, ski hire, lift pass and national park fees. All you will need to pay for is the ski tube and ski clothes/goggles. The murrays buses are really cheap for what you get too and nits a great day! :)

Take them to Canberra for the weekend, stay in a reasonable motel and do a day trip to Jindabyne, no need for ski passes etc just play in the snow! And the other day you could do Parliment house or Questacon (interactive science centre) or the war memorial. Fun and culture in one weekend ?
