My husband and I are starting our own earth moving business.
How do I go about registering the business name? We have an ABN, and the business is up and running. What else do I need to do to ensure it's all legal? Thanks!!

Fair trading for sole trader although for that sort of business I would suggest being a company so you need to see an accountant asap. Also insurances, an insurance broker is the best bet to tell you what you need
Depends on your state so just google registering a business name in your state.
There are a lot of safe work requirements that you will have to meet. Make sure you have a safety plan and prestart operation checklists for all your machinery.
Also have work cover insurance that is relevant in your state as well as public liability insurance.

Most important, register for GST then contact the ATO and make sure you register for fuel tax credits. Operating earthmoving machinery in construction/mining you are eligible for a rebate on your BAS of around 38 cents per litre of diesel. Also have on road rebates for and truck over 4.5 that floats your equipment.
