I was ambivalent until I had my son who was a runner (he walked at just 10months old and was climbing out of bedroom windows in the middle of the night by the time he was 12 months). He just had no sense of danger at all and was a true escape artist. It was a matter of necessity, and it did teach him and break and the cycle of him escaping.
I'd rather have an alive toddler and use a 'leash' than have a dead one and have a moral objection to them.
Before I had kids I thought they were for dogs and lazy parents. Since having 3 kids, with 1 being a 'runner', I have realised they are for safety - conscience parents. Fu@k what anyone else thinks, and do what is best for you and your family!! :-)
I never bought one for my daughter for fear of being judged. She really needed one though, looking back I regret worrying about what others thought. If it makes your life easier and your little one safer then I'm all for them!
I don't like them personally, but don't judge those who have them. I always put my climber/runner Into a trolley. Rouse on him when he did the wrong thing, praised him when he did the right thing and by 3yrs he was no longer a runner. It's constant vigilance and can be tricky with multiple children, or trying to read labels. That's why I liked the trolley- pop them in so I can do what's necessary and pop him out when he was behaving and had my full attention.
There's are some stores you can't take trolleys into. I liked a trolley when possible or a stroller but not all stores have room for them. So that's when I'd use the lead, or even the walk from the car to the trolley we needed a leash. Despite holding hands, he was a slippery little sucker and yes positive reinforcement for holding hands while he was on the leash helped but jeez that kid could slip a tight grip FAST.
I used one, ds thought he had a puppy on his back.
It gave him safety and independence (as he hated holding hands).
If I ever have another child will definitely buy one for them too
This shouldn't even be an issue!! It's not like parents are tying them to a post FFS!! It's about child safety!! If you need it!! Use it!! I would use one of I was taking my toddler to a busy place without a pram!! Losing her would break me!!

I had one for big shopping centres and didn't give any f*&ks what anyone else thought of it. It's not like you're putting on a choker chain.
I'd have the handle of mine looped around my wrist and still hold hands as much as possible.

Also harness is probably a better name for them lol
I have 2 kids aged 8 and 3 and I've never used one but I don't judge people who do.

Do whatever you need to do to keep your babies safe. Those who have running children or multiple children will completely understand.
