I am trying to start a small online business to support my little family. I am finding it hard to get the word out and promote what I am doing via facebook and Instagram.
Does anyone have any suggestions and tips on what I could do please?

Pay for promotion, so that it pops up on people's news feed. Make sure you're posting regularly and not always about your business only - just other things too.
Ensure you use proper grammar and spell check, the minute I see mistakes a leave the page as it appears unprofessional :)
What are your products and who is your audience? You can do fb advertising, or join the right groups and advertise in there. Or start locally and build up a solid client base and use them to spread the word by word of mouth, particularly if what you sell is quality based like photography etc. there is a free template of a marketing plan online, it might be worth completing that to help you focus.
Pay for advertising on Facebook, run competitions where fans have to like and share/tag friends in your posts. There are a lot of Facebook pages where you can share your page like Australian handmad, promote businesses in your local area etc etc. Sell on Esty.
One thing I find really annoy is when I follow a business page and they constantly post things that have nothing to do with their business, so keep it professional. Share your page here we will like it, every like is more views.
