Start home business

Is it possible to start and run a business from a rental house property.
Do home businesses need council approval. Would it change the rent (as owner might see it that we are using his property to make money). We will be very unfront with everything just wondering if anyone is in the same position.
Thanks

If I was to run classes or tutoring from home I wouldnt even think to tell the owner.
I guess it would depend what the use of the house is. But if youre having lots of people go there for an activity you will need liability insurance.

Speak to your local council. Different councils have different rules and regulations. In my area, it has to be approved by the land lord but the rent didn't change, because of zoning restrictions I couldn't have the bottom part of the house as a business because it didn't fit the DA approval, so I lodged a form through the landlord and it was just approved.
My friend who lives 8 minutes away is with a different council and under no circumstances is she allowed to operate a food business from the home.
So speak to council

It depends on the nature of the business. If you intend to have clients coming and going from the home on a daily basis, then best to have a read through your lease and look up council laws.
If you would be working from home, but visiting clients at another location, then it really shouldn't be an issue at all.
