Starting a career in marketing

Hi all.

I'm wanting to start my career in marketing, but I'm finding it very difficult with no experience. I've now been looking into courses but I've been told if I'm going to study marketing I should just go to uni. Is there anyone in marketing who could give me some advise? Is uni the way to go (3 years) or go to TAFE (6 months)? Can I get a job without experience?

It’s a very competitive industry, even for uni grads. What are your strengths, do you have excellent writing skills and creativity? These days you also need things like (depending on the company of course): social media skills, light graphic design skills, even photography skills are helpful, at the very least photo editing. What kinds of skills do you have because if you specialise in a certain area, it may get you a foot in the door without a degree.

I am a Marketing Manager and I got into it without any qualifications. I do have 2 uni degrees but in different fields. That said, I ran my own business for 2 years and did all my own sales and marketing, and I’m naturally very creative, so was familiar with photography, graphic design, running print ads and editing websites, social media posts etc.

Start online!! I’m always looking for someone who can use Wordpress and HTML, and who knows their way around social media as campaigns (I use Facebook and Instagram mostly).

My steps would be:

1. Do a wordpress course & learn a bit of HTML. (I’m sure there’s free online if you’re motivated).
2. Do an Adobe Suite course (primarily inDesign, Illustrator & photoshop).
3. Get a basic knowledge of sales and marketing theory (understanding people’s motivations/demographics/etc... (easy to google!!)

You don’t need uni for those things, and if you’re skilled in that you’re worth more than any uni graduate.
