Unhealthy relationship with food

Unhealthy relationship with food

My husband and I both have unhealthy relationships with food. His stems from deprivation (being hungry and unfed) as a child where mine are more learned habits (finish everything on your plate). I'm really struggling. We eat well rounded diets and exercise regularly but I cannot buy a block of chocolate or a box of ice creams and ration then like a normal person. I will literally eat the whole packet in one evening and then some. I don't want to binge eat. I wake almost every day thinking "today is the day!" but I just can't help myself. Above all else, I want to set good examples for our kids and be around for a long time. Financially, things are very tight at the moment so seeing a therapist just isn't feasible (though definitely looking in to it). What suggestions do others have? Please help!

Speak to your GP about therapy through a publicly funded service, they are out there.

My boys love chocolate! I would let them have one fun size bar or Tim tam or mint slice a day, but when I’d go to get myself a chocolate there would be none or very few left. Both boys were sneaking into the fridge and taking more when no one was looking. I ended up labeling a container with each of the our names then the boys had enough put in their containers for one a day and the rest went to me (chocolate is a trigger for my migraines so I’m good at limiting myself). They were told that ideally they would have one a day, but if they chose to eat them all in a day or two, then there would be no more for the rest of the week. And if they steal from someone else then they would get less the following week. As you have an issue with portion control, you could take this idea a step further and label ziplock bags with the days of the week, a set for you and a set for hubby (and a set for each of the kids if you want) then when you buy chocolate you divide it up into portions as soon as you get home and put each portion into a bag. Then each person can only eat a portion on the relevant day and it’s up to them if they eat it all at once or spread it across the day. Good luck!

I started seeing a hypnotherapist towards the end of last year and the change has been amazing! And honestly, implementing the new habits has actually been no effort at all, the effort came in opening up and realising WHY I was eating the way I was. The lady I used was Caroline Power - The Health Strategist https://thehealthstrategist.com.au
Good luck!!

Hi, a lovely friend of mine Caroline is a nutritionist and runs a business which helps exactly this!! She currently is running a program all about emotional eating. I have personally done the emotional eating program and it was amazing! She also has free content through her Facebook page on how to master your inner Cookie Monster, a heap of blogs, live videos and heaps more! I’ll put the link to her Facebook below. I hope this helps 😊
