Healthy eating on a budget

Healthy eating on a budget

I have just moved house and am paying more rent than previously. So I need to budget better and spend less on my weekly shop. But at the same time I want to lose weight and eat healthier. At the moment I eat a lot of carbs (bread, rice and pasta) because it's cheap and tastes good lol. I want to know how to improve my diet as well as lose weight. I just did a healthy shop and it was well a truly over my budget. Does anyone have any ideas or recipes or anything that could help this mumma out please!

Find yourself a fruit market and shop there. butchers are cheaper for meat when you bulk buy in meat packs, look on Jamie Oliver’s 5 ingredient recipes. They are cheap easy and healthy. If you have a meal plan then shopping healthy is actually very cheap.

Google Skinnymixers. Yes the recipes are thermomix however when you already know how to cook on a stove top or in a slow cooker it's not hard to adapt them for regular cooking. There's a FB page and a website.

It is probably over budget because it's Such a change from your regular. Once you've got things in your fridge and cupboards, it won't be as expensive.

Try cooking bulk healthy meals and freezing some. Or buying in bulk and freezing until later.

Fruit and veg shops are cheaper. And you can buy bulk meat, (expensive to start but will last you weeks if you portion out and freeze).

A meat free meal once a week will help keep cost down a little too

I started healthier eating through calorie counting a couple of months ago... definitely works!
My go to’s are bagged salads (Asian style, kaleslaw etc. $5ea) from woolies/Coles. I use these as a base for a lot- In wraps, stir fry on top etc. A good portion of these with some grilled chicken on top (breast, skewers, schnitz whatever’s cheap!).
Bolognese but sub pasta for prebought zucchini noodles. Wraps with deli meat (packs give you portion size).
Then my back up for when I’m hungry is a big bowl of vegetable soup... chopped carrots, capsicum, whole of celery, beans, tinned toms, stock and eat as much as you want for very low cals.

But really you can have the rice, pizza, pasta... it’s all about portion size!
Im only just starting my journey but calorie counting definitely works. I was averaging a kg a week, stalled for Xmas but about to start again now.
Good luck xo
