Corona virus

I live in an area with a reasonable amount of chinese people. I'm starting to get anxiety about this coronavirus. I have a nearly 3yo who sometimes has breathing problems so I'm stressing so much if she gets it. She goes to daycare and I work in aged care so there is a slight risk if it does start spreading within Australia. Am I stressing over nothing? Is the media hyping this up to be worse than what it is?

You are stressing over nothing.
The chances of her catching it is extremely low.
We’ve had very few cases in Australia and they have been identified extremely quickly and those people have been placed in quarantine while waiting on test results.
Health authorities then chase down anyone who has come into contact with those cases, quarantine and test them.
We are very lucky in this country because we’ve had the opportunity to prepare and have good emergency systems in place for communicable diseases.

This 👏

It's also worth noting that the 7 Australian confirmed corona virus patients are all in a stable condition (something the media conveniently forget to mention or they tack on at the end as an afterthought).

It's something to be aware and cautious about but that goes for all viruses in general.

In 2017, more than 1200 people died because of the flu in Australia. Let that sink in. Where was the hysteria?

Scientists are already working on getting better understanding of how the virus works so that they can develop antiviral medication. Practice good hygiene and ensure your child does same.

Yes there was hysteria at that time. It was also all over the news and the flu injections had run out.

The media loves jumping on these things and getting everyone in hysterics! I wouldn't be worried

It's not the media, they are only reporting what they think people should know with the information they have on hand, its brief and probably somewhat inaccurate. Doctors have been the ones that have been sending the warnings including the world health organisation.

In fact China themselves were able to recreate the virus in their labs within days but they refused to offer their findings to Australia. But Australian scientists were able to do it via certain pointers the Chinese Scientists spoke about. The Carona injection will be quickly on it's way.

So sometimes professionals themselves dont even want us to know the real truth. So It's not just a media hype. Far from from it.

Remember the AIDS hype? And ebola? How many people do you know with either of those? Both are tragic, in the big scheme of things though, is either one the plague that cleanses the earth? Of course the media aims for a frenzy, getting gullible people hooked on buying their bullshit is literally their bread and butter.

I think everyone needs to calm down. The corona virus itself isn’t deadly, it’s just like a cold/flu. It’s when it infects someone who is already susceptible and can travel to their lungs, thus causing pneumonia. The pneumonia is what’s deadly.. not CV.

Granted I put off a few activities in the major city to me and haven’t visited a few places that are generally highly frequented by tourists, I’m going to go about my business. I did take the plunge and visit a major tourist attraction and I did not see one person of Chinese appearance (I would use the word Asian however there were some Indians but other than them, no Asians). It seems they’re being cautious and isolating themselves.

Yes to everything above. I think it’s important to remember that just because your nationality is Chinese doesn’t mean you’re more likely to get the virus.
It has come from China. There is a big difference. The fact that you live in an area that is populated by Chinese people has nothing to do with the virus if they haven’t been in China recently.

If there's anything positive to come from this it's that people's hightened paranoia will make them exhibit a bit of common sense by keeping themselves and their kids home if they're sick, as well as upping their vigilance for hygiene. Hopefully meaning that my kids are less likely to pick up gastro and all the other run of the mill viruses that always seem inevitable when school goes back.

Aside from that, the media has been so irresponsible with their reporting on this. I actually really feel for any Chinese Australians, I've seen so many articles on how this has invoked a racially derogatory response from a vast majority of the public.

Carona virus has been around for centuries. It isn't new. This current one has just mutated from humans coming into contact with illegal animal markets in China. Its similar to SARS or MERS or Swine flu. All mutated from animals to humans .

I watched a documentary on this last week via opinions and evidence from actual doctors, nothing to do with media hype whatsoever. If you want the real story on it, watch some documentaries and Google some facts. The professionals know the low down.

And remember in the grand scheme of things, not many ppl have died at all or been infected but it is important to know it can get out of control and be deadly if left totally ignored by WHO.

Also consider that the black plague of Europe killed 800 ppl A DAY. It wiped out a third of the population so fast and it took 200 years for that one third to populate again. The difference was nobody could get on top of it quick enough and there was no medication for it. Ppl would b infected in the morning and be dead by the evening.

Wahu in China has 11million ppl and carrie's the population of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth combined , and with the death toll already mentioned for the area, it's very, very tiny in comparison. At last count it was 200. Its minimal.

And those infected in Oz at the moment are Chinese.

As long as it can be eradicated b4 it gets out of control, we really have nothing to worry about. Just dont travel to China in the meantime.

There is good reason to be cautious. Make sure you practice good handwashing, avoid crowded busy places and stay away from anyone who is unwell. The likelihood of catching it at the moment in Australia is low... but from reports in China it is 4 x more likely to result in death than typical seasonal flu. My local GP practice was closed yesterday because someone wandered in, no mask, with suspected CV. It's good practices are being vigilant and cautious... but we need to do the same at an individual level.

I am a nurse in an infectious disease ward. I’ve dealt with testing these people. I’m not even stressed. More chance of catching flu. Relax and don’t be racist. White people may have gone to China too

I work in an area with lots of Chinese children. They cough, spew and sneeze all over me. I dont change my attitude or behavior based on nationality. Have probably taken more infectious(serious) on my uniform than we ever will with coronavirus. Last year we had so many dose and dumps that ended up being flu A and B. My whole family had more time of last year than all our life sick days combined lol.
