I’m thinking of starting an apprenticeship, the thing is I’m 32. Ive been thinking about it for a few years but then I got pregnant again and now the time is coming for me to go back to work and I really don’t want to go back to hospitality. Financially an apprenticeship wage would be fine, we’ve lived off 1 wage and 2 formula fed babies before so I know how to be frugal. But will anyone hire a “mature” apprentice? And tafe, I’m dreading the thought of being the oldest person there. I guess my question is, would you trust a 32 year old apprentice hairdresser?

I retrained at 30. The best thing is, once you're working, people assume you're more experienced and trust you more. Also, your life experience, maturity, general know how helps you fit in and succeed and work with and for people, a lot more than it did when we were early 20s.
I'd trust a 32 year old apprentice more than a teenager.
Retraining, studying, new career paths happens all the time.
Getting an apprenticeship would depend on what government incentives there are for certain age groups. Unfortunately, money talks. So check what's around & go for it!
My dad became qualified as a mechanic at 30 and then as a diesel mechanic at 45. Both were apprenticeships. Anything is possible!!
I love this 💕
I’m gonna be brutally honest I was an adult apprentice in hairdressing and it was so hard to find a salon to take me on and when I did they only paid me a junior rate
Thats actually illegal
I started my apprenticeship at 28. I'm almost 31 and half way there.. fo tafe with 15 seventeen year old boys hahaha and they love me!! I regret not doing it sooner but I am so grateful that I decided to do it! The wage thing is no issue, you will be paid as a mature age apprentice, and there are benefits you can apply for as well, such as a trade support loan. Get on the phone and ask around asap!! Look at it this way.. in 4 years, you will be 36 whether you do your apprenticeship or not, in 4 years, you will still be 36.. go for it! I have never regretted a single day of starting what I wanted to do x
I employed a 40 year old apprentice! She was a client of mine and we had spoken in the in the past of her desire be a hairdresser from a young age but she’d started a family instead. She was enthusiastic and driven, so open to learn and try absolutely everything, had a lot more confidence than some of my younger apprentices and her life experiences and her experiences as a mother was a huge benefit to having her in my salon. She was paid more than a junior apprentice but not as much as senior stylist. (Check the award). Another way to begin is to try hairdressing colleges that can fast track your apprenticeship. Places like the Brisbane School of Hairdressing offer courses (for a price) that condense training into half the time. The right salon will see your value. The only way you’ll know is to try and apply! All the best!
Go for it!!! I’m 40 years old and this year I started my nursing diploma and plan to do my bachelors once this is finished. You’re never too old to learn something new !!
I went back to uni at 30. You won’t be the oldest at all. My husband is a tradie and him and all his friends prefer mature age apprentices because they actually want to do the trade and have some life experience.
Retraining at 30 was categorically the best decision I have made, easy decision, no way, hard work..... so much!! But it has paid off 10 fold. Good luck! ❤️
My partner was a labourer and decided at 30 he wanted to retrain. He had no trouble getting or completing a trade apprenticeship.
