Why do kids say this?

I understand that kids taste change regarding food. I don't like all the same foods I used to. But WHY do kids say "Mum, I NEVER liked that!" when that's clearly not true? All of my kids have said this about foods that they did indeed used to eat a lot. They used to ask for it while we were shopping or at restaurants. Do your kids say this as well? Why do you think this is? Do they actually not remember not liking it or is it for a different reason...it just confuses me. This is kids ranging in ages from 6-teenage years btw. So they should be able to remember liking that food that they ate just a short time ago, right?

Sometimes I used to say this as a kid. It was when I ate something that was β€˜ok’ but not preferred and then i would develop a strong dislike for it over a couple of times eating it.
I did genuinely not really like it, but I ate it. And my intensity of not liking it increased over time.
Also sometimes if I ate thing out of the house especially id be polite and say I was enjoying something and of course it would reach a point where being rude and showing my distaste for something out weighed myself desire to be polite.

That makes sense...thanks. It just really confused me particularly with my oldest and apple pies. She used to ask for apple pies with cream constantly at bakeries. Even though there were many other options and no one else would choose it. Then one day she tells me she's never liked apple pies...but why ask for them? She wasn't being influenced by any of us as it's not something her siblings and I would have picked. I wish I could read minds sometimes πŸ˜‚

Yeah theyre crazy. I think its 2 main things. Now they HATE it they only remember the times they tried it and HATED it and wont possibly recall any thing else. And secondly, its like mum trying to tell them theyre wrong so their response is to deny it even more fervently. To be fair if they cant remember it, its not true in their mind.
If you say oh yeah you hate apple pie now, did you know when you were little you chose an apple pie with cream as big as your head and you SCOFFED IT! They might respond differently, laugh and say oh did I.

Maybe they get it fed too many times so get sick of it. I can be the same with certain foods

Oh I get the part of not liking it anymore. I just didn't get the part of saying they never liked it, when they did used to like it lol

Mine does it too, don’t let it get to you, kids are very irrational human beings lol

Kids can be very all or nothing thinkers πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ don't read too much into it. If they don't like something now, they probably don't remember ever liking it.

I *know* I used to eat (and I assume like) scrambled eggs when I was little. I don't remember it and I definitely do not like them now - I can't even be in the same room with someone eating eggs, the smell makes me gag.
