D-Dimer and Pregnancy

Are these results normal?

I presented to the hospital with Tachycardia that presents when standing, they did a d-dimer test on me and then when they got the results brushed it off and said they shouldn’t have done the test because I’m pregnant and that skews the results. I’m only 5 weeks and I looked it up, the d-dimer results in the study for first trimester is 300ish to 700ish, mine is 1213.

I have a referral to a cardiologist and am getting a 24hr holter but am concerned about them brushing off the results of this test. Has anyone else been through the same thing and the high result was fine?

They shouldn’t brush anything off. When it’s elevated it’s a sign of blood clots. That with your heart racing shouldn’t be ignored. I recently had this test and not pregnant. I was told autoimmune can always elevate it slightly. Mine was higher and I was rushed in for a PE lung xray. Luckily all clear. Don’t ignore any signs or symptoms ring 000 if you get the heart racing again . Go with your gut. You are at higher rush of blood clots being pregnant. Don’t ignore your body. Go to ER

Don’t let them brush this off. Go to emergency. do you have any pain shortness of breathe, swelling or red marks anywhere? they should at least do a leg ultrasound.

They can’t say one thing and mean another.? Why did they even blood test for it in the first place then. You may have a blood clot and with tachycardia this is a sign of a blood clot. Go to the hosp and don’t leave until a blood clot is ruled out. They should be doing an ultrasound and if need be a ct scan. Yes last resort in pregnancy for a ct scan scan but you have 2 very concerning things that point to a blood clot. pregnancy is a risk for blood clots. My friend had blood clots and was ignored by several Drs in E.R even with having a history and gene for it. After refusing to leave the hospital and one Dr overhearing his conversation he was finally listening to, kept in and ended up in ICU. Had he have listened to being sent home, he wouldn’t be here today. Listen to your body. If you know there is something not right here, go back until they listen to you and do further testing. This would not sit comfortable with me at all. You should not have tachycardia and elevated d dimer for no reason. Dangerous combination that should be ruled out. I know they don’t like to do ct scans in pregnancy but they need to do something to rule out a blood clot. Maybe try a different E.R if you get anymore symptoms please call an ambulance better to be safe than sorry. Good luck with it all. It may be nothing but you need peace of mind to absolutely know that it is nothing. You have your whole pregnancy ahead of you.

Okay, d dimer tests are extremely inaccurate.
Unless you were in the acute phase of the attack, elevated is fine, high readings are not. And early pregnancy can skew the results dramatically. Also any medications you take will change these results. Also; your probably hadn’t tasted before the blood test which can also skew the result.

I do urge you to monitor your symptoms and present to emergency again if you feel unsure, unsafe or unwell.
