Early puberty

Early puberty

Hi Mums!
I have an 8 year old daughter who I think might be going through early puberty, would that be a thing? She’s growing actual boobs (yes boobs and not fat as she’s lost weight in the last 12 months), also has a huge amount of hair where I didn’t think it should be at this age. She’s also always so cranky and takes a very long time to fall asleep. I’ve just been to the doctor to send a referral to a peads doctor as it’s also affecting her schooling. (12 month wait at least). She’s falling asleep in class and being very disruptive as well as refusing to do any school work and just sleeps in class I think because she is tired. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don’t want this to ruin her schooling and want her to actually learn, she’s a very bright girl but is struggling.

I went through puberty at 10, which was considered fine, however i think your daughter is going through precocious puberty. She will need to see a dr/pead or someone who will run tests and help her.

Paediatric endocrinologist is who you need to see. If in Brisbane Erin Sharwood is good at Qld paediatric endocrinology in the Gabba.

Has she been tested for Type 1 diabetes for the tiredness and weight loss?is she often thirsty or peeing more than usual? Nothing to do with puberty, just the tiredness and weight loss, concerned me.

my friends kids had their period at 9, so may very well be on the way and she’s hit puberty early.

It's definitely possibly that it's puberty, but as others have suggested it's best to get her checked. I'm concerned with the long wait list...is there nowhere else you can try? Even if it means travelling further? Do you have health insurance?
