Hi!
I have a question with public schools and the fees/costs. We are in nsw public school and the school is charging fees for what I feel should be free. Athletics carnivals (in our own school yard, no travel), school assemblies, etc plus there is the annual school fee. (Which is totally fine!). Just wondering if all schools charge for these things? I'm happy to pay the annual school fee and excursions when they actually go places.
We were in a flood affected zone and the government have given all families $500 account to use on school things such as uniforms and excursions. Ever since we have the $500, the school is charging for everything! Just wondering what other schools policies are ? Thanks :)

You'll probably find they are "technically" asking for a voluntary contribution (without making it really clear). I would question the school, I would not be paying for assemblies and sports day!
No have never paid for sports days or any assembly.
Only ever paid for school fees (voluntary contributions) excursions, special days (yr 6 graduation, treat days etc)
I agree with the above comment about it being a voluntary thing.
Do they explain what the costs are actually for? Like what would need to be paid for in an assembly??
I'd politely ask for a breakdown of these costs and why they're suddenly appearing as soon as much needed relief funds are appearing.
If you're not satisfied, ask the state education body directly who'll hopefully contact them to explain & stop anything unscrupulous.
Even better, your local state or federal member (whichever govt level gave the grant). The government doesn't take kindly to their money being misappropriated (wasted, sure, misused, not so much, go figure).
Use whichever you feel comfortable with. You might get an explanation or not, but if it's potentially a misuse of funds it should be investigated.
In NSW, schooling is free, and no one can be forced to pay for education, as education is a right, not a privilege. Any time a school excludes a student they can be reported to the education department.
IV put 6 kids, step and bio through school and never handed over a cent. IV only ever paid got uniforms, canteen and excersions. Our primary school has never asked, or sent a bill to any students, and our highschool send out notice. But it says in very tiny print that fees are optional
