NDIS PROCESS

Hi can anyone explain NDIS to me. Do you apply on behalf of your child. My child is ADHD diagnosed. And wondering what is the process to apply for NDIS. And what sort of things do NDIS provide the applicant. Thx.

NDIS doesn't cover ADHD.

If you need information on how to apply, or what it covers and what it offers, check NDIS.gov.au or join your local NDIS Facebook discussion group to ask people already using the scheme.

You apply by calling them & requesting a form, or downloading it & attaching reports, diagnoses letters etc. If you're successful a liaison officer will help you plan out goals & what you need and submit that to NDIS for approval. They'll allocate funding (it's hit & miss).

ADHD does not appear on the list of disabilities supported by the NDIS, which means that unless there is another disability which could be a primary disability, the ADHD cannot be considered by the NDIS <—— that information is off the google.

But to answer your question, yes as a parent, it would be you that makes the application on behalf of your child.

I should also mention that depending on the age of the child, if they are under 7 you may be able to get ‘early intervention’ which is easier to get without a diagnosis, especially if there is reason to believe the child may have other issues not yet diagnosed.

It really sucks because NDIS seem to have a fine line between what they consider a disability and a medical/mental health issue.

My daughter is 16 and has ASD1 but also an eating disorder called ARFID. Because of this she’s on a feeding tube and has been for 6 years.

NDIS will fund support for her ASD1 diagnosis, but nothing for her eating disorder as they say that she has the feeding tube due to the ARFID and not the ASD.

Yet despite all her medical reports highlighting the sensory issues around food due to the ASD and the fact that the ASD is likely impacting her eating more than the ARFID, and all reports clearly stating it is highly unlikely she will ever NOT have a feeding tube we’re staring down the road of no services (either from the hospital due to her age, or NDIS) with neither willing to cover the cost of her feeds for the feeding tube.

My child is incontinent and they never provide enough funding for catheters etc. and limit funding for physio sessions. It's quite disappointing.

NDIS won't provide support for an ADHD diagnosis after the age of 7 years old.
NDIS will provide early intervention services for ADHD before the age of 7 but as far as I am aware won't provide much other support.
Yes you apply on behalf of your child.
Download the application form from their website. Follow the instructions and provide the requested documentation. If successful they will contact you and outline the rest of the process.
