New diagnosis

Hi ladies,
I have been unwell for about a month, really unwell. I have been having lots of tests and seeing other specialists arranged by my GP. Yesterday the pieces all finally came together and now they know what organ is causing me to be so unwell so now we know what direction to go.
I work in a very stressful position full time but often work 55 hours or more per week. This doesn’t allow me much time to look after myself once I do all the family stuff.
I need to make myself a priority right now and look after my health.
Would you reduce your hours to part time knowing that will probably make the position more stressful as there will be less hours to do everything?
Or, would you resign and find a position with less stress and less hours where once you have finished work for the day that, that’s it?
I must prioritise me right now and I’m struggling at that thought as I have never put myself first, ever.
I have a follow up appointment in a month as I have more tests I need to do. I know once the next tests are done, that I will be sent off to more specialists ect to manage my new normal.
It all feels too much right now but I know my health is the most important thing right now.
Have you been faced with this?

Well cutting your hours should not result in more work to do over those hours! Your job sounds wrong and you should be able to put boundaries in place that you won’t take your work home and you can only achieve what you can achieve in the hours you’re paid.
Prioritising yourself means telling your boss ‘I don’t take my work home, I have other things to do in that time, I will do that on Monday’ or if they’re unhappy ‘can you prioritise what you want me to complete in my work hours’. I’m a teacher I hear colleagues battling this all the time, but you have to set boundaries and just say no, I couldn’t get it done and I’m finished for today. You have to switch be able to switch off and switch on to home time/ family time/ etc.

I personally have been through this! I found a role to work from home and only 38 hours! Yes, less money but my kids never knew how much was in my bank account and they still don’t now - so I’m here for a long time, for them!

I think this depends on a lot of things, do you have to earn what you do to survive? are you permanent full time? can you take extended leave rather than resigning if you love your job and want to go back? can you work PT with a reviewed work load? is your employer willing to work with you. If this was my staff, i would ask what they wanted and see if i could get an outcome for goth person and work place. That said if you can afford to quit and this is the push you need, then do it and reset as needed .
