Career

My son is completing year 10 this year and doesn’t know what career path he wants to do, he doesn’t want to continue school or go to university. Can anyone please recommend a great career path through traineeship/apprentership please?

This is not an attack on you as a parent…. I am seeing so many parents just wanting to push their kids straight into high paying careers. It’s no longer about finding a job that you love, given how long your expected to work.
Has he had any conversations with his careers officer at school?
What are his passions right now?

I think it has always been like this, we were all expected to know what we wanted to be in year 9 so we would pick the right subjects in year 10 and this was 30 years ago. It's not good at all though, we have to stop putting so much pressure on them to pick something. I did it to my eldest, I was so anxious for him because he had no idea what he wanted to do and just went from dead end job to dead end job until 23 when he found a career that he loves. He would not have this job if I had pushed him into an apprenticeship. We put pressure on our kids to jump straight into a career because we think its the right thing to do but if they do not know what they want then the best thing is to let them figure it out by themselves, try jobs in different industries so they can get an idea of what they do or don't want to do.

Not many kids at that age know what they truly want to do. They're kids ffs. Why they are expected to make a life long choice so young is beyond me.

Perhaps get him to find a basic job in a supermarket or something, and then look into tafe coursed and apprenticeships. He has his whole life to study later on in his chosen career.
