Adenomyosis and Hysterectomy

Hello sisters. I have adenomyosis, which has been torturing me for a couple of years now. I have asked for an ablation, however the doctor thinks it's best to just go ahead with a laparoscopic hysterectomy (leaving the ovaries), as she believes that is best to deal with the ongoing pain and discomfort. I have some reservations. I am terrified of the post-op pain, the weight gain and hormonal/emotional issues, the recovery and downtime (I mainly do everything at home with regard to cooking and taking care of kids). Has anyone had any other treatment for adenomyosis or is this the best thing to do? Thanks in advance.

Hysterectomy is the only cure for adenomyosis. It was the best thing I ever did. When you leave the ovaries you do not enter menopause so there is no change to weight or hormones. You will hit menopause when your ovaries stop producing eggs - nothing to do with your uterus. There is 4-6 weeks where you will need to be careful and avoid strenuous activities. Your doctor will be able to provide guidelines. It's a good idea to pre-freeze some easy meals prior to your surgery. Pain will vary with each person. My pain after leaving hospital was managed by panadol (because I'm allergic to opioids) but the fitter you are, the better. You will need someone to help out for about 2 weeks as you don't want to tear internal stitches. Ablations often fail and people end up having hystetectomy.
