My eldest is starting high school in 2025. His bday is coming up in October and we want to get him a very basic phone (OPPO or Galaxy A series). For safety, we would like to have some extra protection on it -for things like msgs, apps etc. He is a mature great kid but I just want some advice on what other parents use.

I love family link for Android phones. They can't access the link through their own phones. You can't read texts but you can control what apps they use, how long they can use each app. You can block apps, track where they are, and put the phone into sleep mode to prevent staying up all night on the phone. It's totally free
As for phones. Samsung A searies are awesome phones and worth the price. I have gotten my kids oppos in the past and they lag, and get glitchy.
