I am studying Education at university. In saying that I study education at university, I'm quite undecided as to whether or not teaching is really for me. I love children - I adore them. I love watching them learn and grow, but I am unsure about this career path.
I have been interested in travel agency, and I am putting this out in hope to find someone with experience or simply knowledge on the industry. What's it really like, and is it a worthwhile career? Income isn't a worry - being happy in your job is more important to me!
Thank you very much! x

I didn't last long as a travel agent - I thought it was my dream career but it was a nightmare for me. I'm not sure what the industry standard is but in the particular chain I started with, the "base" wage was only about $28k ($900/mth) and you made the rest up with commission, but it can take awhile to build up your clientèle and get to that stage especially because you only received 10% of your "cost in seat" (ie what it cost the company to keep you in that chair - you need to make that each month and then some in commission, mine was $9600) and 30% of any extra going directly to you. I experienced a really nasty case of a coworker screwing me over - I was new and didn't know that I had to enter the person's details into the computer to "claim" them as my client, even if they weren't ready to book yet. I spent alot of time and effort putting together a holiday package for her, and when she called back, one of my colleagues pounced on the fact that I hadn't "claimed" her and did the booking and claimed the commission, telling me afterwards that "Now you'll always remember to claim them" - ie, he knew what he was doing.
But I hope that was just a limited experience - I think the fierce sales targets are universal, but I know some of my colleagues genuinely loved their jobs, were making quite good money (up to $75kpa), got to go on some amazing trips and got super excited when clients came back in and showed off holiday snaps or had gotten them a little souvenir.
